Upcoming Shows

Trying to catch up on my updates! 

Here are two upcoming shows i'm thrilled to be a part of, two of which are curated by the talented Chogrin

First is 8 Bit and Beyond 2 at Bottleneck Gallery opening in a little over a week.  Happy to be in this, seeing as one of the first shows i was a part of with Chogrin (and The Autumn Society!) was the 8 Bit and Beyond back in 2009.  Check out my piece from back then here :) 

And second comes a new show featuring the good old classic Popeye! 

Lastly, i'll be a part of POPzilla's BURTON show!  As a huge Tim Burton fan, and tremendously influenced by him and his work, i am thrilled for this.  Really looking forward to making some fun pieces for this one.

"Chew on a Dog!"

One of my new favorites!  I tried something new by painting a distorted piece of wood.  Thought it fit well with the theme of this painting.  A Beetlejuice-inspired 1EG!  It was pretty fun to watch Beetlejuice while i painted this one.  You'll notice in the bottom photo, the sides are textured.  I used Crackle Paste on the sides to give it a crazy cracking look.  Love it.

She's now on display and for sale at my show "Lemonade Stand" at Trenton Social for all of November.

saturday night was the premeire for the ICONOCLASTIC DEAD show at guru gallery in MEXICO!  i was worried when my piece almost didn't make it there, but it got there and i'm excited to see some coverage since i'm not able to be there myself.

dia de los burton

we hit france, and now we're heading to MEXICO!  the autumn society is having the amazing "the iconoclastic dead" show at galeria guru in mexico city! the show premieres october 1 and runs to the end of the month, october 31. i'm honored to be one of 40+ artists participating in this phenominal show.

the iconoclastic dead is a "Dia De Los Muertos" themed show where artists celebrate someone famous they admire that is either dead or alive in the "Muertos" fashion.
 

i chose to illustrate tim burton. although i initially grew as an artist admiring and looking up to salvador dali most of all, tim burton has slowly been advancing a step ahead in my heart. i'm beyond inspired by all that tim burton does. his vision and his ideas are unique and dark and confusing. everything i love. growing up, i was obsessed with his movies and when i became old enough to realize that there was much more to tim burton than movies, i was able to start appreciating his art and his mind.  it's like a weird distanced relationship that evolved from childhood to adulthood. this is just my weird, long, unnecessary way of saying he inspires me.

i designed my piece as a 3-dimensional piece. burton and the white border on one piece of glass, the floral pattern on another piece, are all raised about an inch above background with tge sandworm and skull. an additional bit of dimension is the swirly hill silhouette, which is placed about halfway between the top and bottom layers.  basically, there are a lot of layers going on and it looks pretty amazing in person. these photos absolutely do it no justice.

 initially, i wanted to include several characters from tim burton movies and his artwork, all designed in the day of the dead style. to keep a better flow to the pieces, i only featured the sandworm and some jack skellington heads.

tim burton at the MoMA

so apparently several people thought my choice of words for yesterday's contest was confusing. i didn't think it was, but my apologies!! i'll make it better for next week's free drawing(TUESDAY!)

took this picture months ago before the exhibit was running so it's nice and empty!

i finally got to the MoMA on saturday to see the tim burton exhibit. words cannot explain how much i loved it (although the number of people there practically ruined it for me.) as an artist, i should love going to museums and seeing lots of art, but i kind of hate it. i get bored and tired, but mostly angry. the amount of anger i get towards certain art is irrational, but i'll get into that another day. i do enjoy visiting smaller galleries with artists i actually like, such as greg simkins and damon soule, who i saw at joshua liner gallery. amazing shows.

but tim burton! wow. he's phenomenal. he has everything i love about art (and life!) twisted, but witty humor and creepy borderline-scary imagery. his scenes, his characters. they're unique and experimental. i noticed and then my boyfriend mentioned it shortly after, that some of his drawings are kinda nothing special, but as a whole with 10-20-30 drawings all stacked on each other or in a row, it becomes infinitely more awesome. i know tim burton mostly from his movies, so just seeing such a large quantity of his work in one small area was amazing. you can never really feel someone's style significantly until you see it all as a whole. not only was i amazed by seeing so much of his legit artwork for the first time, there was also sketches, [props, scribbles of thoughts from his big time movies. favorites, of course, being mars attacks and beetlejuice! it was just really fun to see these already familiar characters scribbled on paper by the person responsible for their existence, in a style i've never seen them in before.

don't tell salvador dali that tim burton might have stolen my heart on this one. the dali museum in st. petersburg, fl, was absolutely amazing and he is my favorite artist of all time.. buuut... i'm torn. torn between two loves.

if it wasn't the last weekend and already sold out and people didn't use my wheelchair for a stepping stool, i'd want to go back, real bad. i hope you all got the chance to see it!
