It is with great pleasure and honor to announce the beginning of the Autumn Society Mexico. For starters, The Autumn Society's "THE ICONOCLASTIC DEAD" show was a big success in Mexico City! So much so, that we have signed on for several more shows to take place in Mexico City between 2012 & 2013!

At this point I'd like to thank several people for making this dream a reality. German Orozco for his leadership, friendship, the marimba, and for taking this show above and beyond! Jorsh Pena, for providing some stellar special guests and artists. Jorge Gutierrez, Rhode Montijo, and Alberto Cerriteno for sharing their wonderful art and accompanying us on the show. Guru Galeria y tienda for all the love and goods that they provided for the show (papel picado, t-shirts, postcards, ads, tequila, and all the rest!). Another big thank-you to Rosario Ruiz, Manuel Lugh, Romero Chagoyan, Bere & Bere, POGO, and all of the Hula Hula gang! Gracias a todos who came out that night!

shell-shock coverage

some autumn society SHELL-SHOCK coverage from this past june, including images of the pieces and interviews by the artists, including little old reluctant me. we all know i hate speaking. you're only allowed to watch this video if you promise not to mock my awkward nervousness that makes me sound like a complete airhead or that weird eye-rolly thing i do. i should be banned from being on camera. but it's a great fun coverage, so take a looky.

blue player two

i'm incredibly excited to take part in my very first international show. the autumn society's going to  paris, france at LA FLAQ GALLERY: "8-BIT CHAMPIONS"! (produced & curated by CHOGRIN and Thomas Olivri-in association with geek-art.net ). the theme of the show is to illustrate an 8-bit game... and while the first game i saw on the list was circus charlie, (which instantly became my absolute favorite arcade game once i visited the amazing FUN SPOT in new hampshire,) i chose to illustrate bubble bobble. my favorite NES game of all time.

it was an easy decision to make, but once i tried to choose specifics from the game, it became impossible. i wanted to include the potion. i wanted to include the BIG diamond. i grew up on this game and it became clear to me how obsessed i really was with this game when i went home the other day and heard my dad whistling the entire theme song flawlessly without having played or heard it anytime recently.  not to mention it's been my ringtone for months.. :)

in the end i chose level 1.  it may not be my favorite level and it's not the most exciting or eventful, but it's the level we always played no matter what. (and by we, i mean my sister and i.)  we always started from the beginning. there was no saving, there was no continuing at a later date. level 1 is the level we have seen more than any level.  i wanted to include all my favorite items and prizes, but i kept it simple and accurate, something i have trouble forcing myself to do.

i chose to highlight player 2, the blue dinosaur, rather than player 1, the green.  the blue dude was always mine. i spent literally more than half my nintendo time watching my sister play or being the inferior player 2. my sister (righfully) hogged player 1 in any game, so no matter what i was player 2, and that blue little dinosaur represents me as a gamer. the epitome of my entire childhood-video game-memories-life-ish.

last little detail about this piece, i made my player 2 on a 3-dimensional bubble.  an old accessory from a munny figure was a half-sphere with little pegs for "dunny" ears.  i took off the ears, added some clay and smoothed it out for a round surface.  perfect for a bubble. you can see below the 3-D effect. i just wanted a little more emphasis on the 2nd player, seeing as how much he means to me. i know it's just a video game, but it really feels like a huge part of my memorable little childhood.

Artist Chogrin (chogrinart.blogspot.com) tribute to the films by Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps & Monster Squad). The event featured art tributes by selected artists from the Autumn Society (www.theautumnsociety.com) and other special guests.

Tech Stuff:
Shot on a Canon T2i with a 50mm 1.4 prime lens @ 24fps. Audio recorded on Zoom H4n later synced with FCPX. Audio in FCPX was highly enhanced and modified via "Hum Remover". LCDVF viewfinder with D-Focus follow focus.

rockets, robots, and ray guns

 the autumn society's "rockets, robots, and ray guns" opened july 1 at toothless cat/jinxed gallery in northern liberties (philadelphia), my favorite area of philly. the piazza is adorable and a perfect place to view and share art, and to watch a gigantic screen of sports or movies or whatever they're playing. the show was curated by the very talented paul palcko, who i finally got the chance to meet and chat with after sharing the walls for a bunch of past shows. there were over 30 pieces of art by local and national artists, and...  "The Autumn Society will visually explore the sudden invasion of these machines into Earth culture. The Toothless Cat/ Jinxed in Philadelphia will be host the explosion event...

my piece was a 3D painting of a cyborg in space, read about it here. sure my gallery photo has a highly distracting glare, but you can just safely assume it looked awesome.

her celestial body

this is my piece for the much anticipated "rockets, robots, and ray guns" show (see show info below).

i normally like to show the layers of my 3D paintings, but the layers in this one are especially hard to show.  there are 4 total layers (kind of..) but the most important (and my favorite) are the layers of the starry sky.  i used the layers and depth to create space. outer space. i know it's not uncommon or unique to say i've always been drawn to and have a life-long infatuation with the night sky, but i have and do. my first tattoo at age 17 was of little twinkling stars, when my consuming night sky obsession was at its highest. when i decided to make my cyborg 1EG (i think we can all guess why i chose a cyborg), it didn't take long to set my focus on a starry, spacey, galaxy-like atmosphere. it creates an effect you can only get in person, so come out to northern liberties in philly to see it while you can! we have an amazing artist participation list on this one, so come out to see for yourself.

The walls of The Toothless Cat/Jinxed Gallery will explode with imagery as The Autumn Society presents another out of this world event: “Rockets, Robots, and Ray-Guns” (a retro sci-fi gallery art show). The show will feature over 30 pieces of art by local and national artists. All present their perspective and vision of the retro-sci fi imagery of Rockets, Robots, and Ray-Guns

The art show will be curated by local Philadelphia artist/illustrator, Paul Palcko (http://www.paulpalcko.com/), known best for his clown paintings and Clowntastrophe! events. (A joint effort between Palcko and Psydde Delicious of Delicious Boutique)

“Rockets, Robots, and Ray-Guns” will be an amazing show of talent and retro sci-fi imagery-it’ll be a blast!” comments Autumn Society co-founder, Chogrin (who is also producing this event.)

shell-shock art show!

i showed you the pizza box exclusive prints from the autumn society's SHELL-SHOCK ninja turtle art show, now here are a few photos of the show!

i spoke to a bunch of people who said they really liked my piece, so that was exciting of course. you can also see there are so many amazing pieces of all different characters in all different styles. see even more on the autumn society's blog .

the show had a huge turn out. tons of people came by to check out the art, and there was constant crowds throughout the night.  there were a lot more people than this, but you sure can see it was a packed show.

most importantly, the homemade turtle van!! awesome.

triceraton

turtle power! here's a quick peek at some the autumn society's exclusives from the shell-shock show at brave new worlds recently. limited prints were made of all different ninja turtle characters, all by different artists. i was chosen to illustrate TRICERATON! i admittedly didn't know who triceraton is, but i was excited since it is clearly a dinosaur-based character(s).  triceratons are actually an alien race who resemble anthropomorphic triceratops, and breathe a mix of nitrogen and sulfur. they wear protective helmets to provide them with the necessary atmosphere, and their home planet was destroyed for some unexplained reason. thank you, TMNTpedia!  

i drew my guy real quick one night and unfortunately was forced to color him on the computer. i was given specific colors and instructions for the illustrations (as you can see why in the photos). we all know how much i suck with digital art, so he's not the greatest illustration ever made. he's pretty simple, definitely different for me.. but i love the character and colors. these awesome limited prints were for sale at the shell-shock show, in special gnarly pizza boxes, along with gummy pizzas and fantastic autumn society/ninja turtle buttons.

the 3B show !

i flew out to california for the opening of the 3b show at gallery 1988 venice. with beetlejuice as one of my all time favorite movies, i may have been more psyched for this than any other show i've participated in. the night of the show was fun times with friends, family, a ton of awesome geeky fans (i include myself), and two deloreans! after being interviewed by the voice of marty from the back to the future video game (you can see the video here), i got behind the delorean's driver's seat and instantly turned into a mega-nerd. i sat inside, pressing awesome working buttons while continuous flashes went off for tons of photos and way too much happiness filled my insides. it was just flat out fun. before i was reluctantly and sadly forced to leave early thanks to a dreadful, horrible, life-ruining stomach virus, i enjoyed everyone's pieces in person (always a better experience), fell in love with many pieces, met some of the other talented artists, and had a lovely time. i also got lots of nice comments about my work which always makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.  huge, huge thanks to gallery 1988 and chogrin for putting on and having me participate in another amazing show! .... and even bigger thanks to my sisters for taking care of me when i was literally on my deathbed while ruining their (our) short trip to california.

gnarly gnight

i've been checking out everyone's pieces for the autumn society's shell shock ninja turtle tribute show and they have been pretty amazing. this show is going to be huge. i FINALLY got the chance to make mine. unfortunately i had basically no time for it, so it's a little more "painterly" and a little less detailed than i would have liked, but i'm still very pleased with the result only because it is another 3-D painting.  here are the separate laters of my gnarly gnight painting (pronounced NIGHT, not g'night!)

michelangelo is on glass raised about 1/4 inch above the city background. i had to do michelangelo because he's my favorite. i assume donatello was my favorite growing up because i was (and am) obsessed with the color purple, but mikey has always been the best character. i hope as many people check out the show as expected considering this of course looks infinitely better in person. these layered pieces are hard enough to get photos of, but i just couldn't get a good photo of this one (maybe because it was 2 am and i desparately wanted/needed sleep before a long, sleepy day of work. i was horribly crashing.)
