wiener dog cupcakes

i was commissioned to make these cupcakes for a coworker recently. wiener dog cupcakes! she gave me a photo to copy from, so sadly i can't take credit for the design.  this was my first attempt with fondant, and i had literally no idea what i was doing. i just kind of winged it and i think it came out cute. maybe i'll try more fondant in the future, but i prefer the taste and look of some good ol' messy icing.

slumber party!!!

the greatest slumber party cupcakes of all time. each made specifically for and of each person in attendance. my personal favorite are drew, sportin' the dreads, the only male with a teddy bear, wide-eyed awake, possibly scared. cory, the monster giant too tall for his sleeping bag with his feetsies sticking out.  and bill, who is...a teddy bear.

the design i got from hello, cupcake and the were very easy to make.

happy birthday dr. seuss!

okay so his birthday was on friday, but thanks to working in a school, i celebrated it artistically through cakes and bulletin boards!

my GREEN green eggs and ham cake

dr. seuss bulletin boards and decorations ! i spent lots of time drawing these up and cutting these out. best job ever being able to sit and draw all day to make all the little kiddies happy with a cartoon seussy atmosphere.

(ok i only made the lorax here in this one, and he's adorable)

cake pops

cake pops! the newest "art form" i've been playing with lately. here are my first three attempts.  babies (design from bakerella), zombies, and super mario.  they make really cute treats, but are unbelievably time consuming. those mushrooms took up an entire day to make. i'd say they're hard to make, but i can't decide whether or not i'm confusing hard with time consuming. a lot more practice and maybe my cake pops will look amazing and not so lumpy !

animals and carnival cakes

last week, i showed you my cartoony half of the too-many-cupcakes i made at the end of my summer vacation. this is part 2 with the rest of the time/life consuming cupcakes i made at that same time.

i attempted the shark cupcakes from "hello, cupcake."  it didn't work out so well. twinkies dipped in hot icing where i burnt my fingers like crazy. fruit by the foot that for some reason were sliced into 3 small strips, causing troubles for the sharks' mouths. basically i got frustrated and just let whatever was going to happen, happen. when all was said and done i loooked at the mess of "sharks" and i added some goldfish with googly eyes and i felt better. i was amused.

for the owner of a nice black cat, i took "hello, cupcake's cat design, originally meant for halloween, and with less yellows and oranges, they just look like nice little black kitties. made of melted dark chocolate with black sprinkles on top, the cats were kind of delicious.

my sister gave me the coolest cake pan ever for my birthday. animals, where you could decorate however, with the option of putting scoops of ice cream in their mouths. going to try these again!

my aunt asked me to do a carnival cake for my cousin's birthday. i warned her it was going to look very homemade... but she agreed, so here is my very homemade-looking carnival cake. i stole the melted candy with sprinkles idea (from the black cats above) for the lion's mane. it looked furrier.

along with the carnival cake, were a ton of "popcorn" cupcakes. marshmallows with x's cut in them, yellow mist spray, and yellow gel spray for kernels. unbelievable hand cramps from cutting x's in a bag and a half of mini marshmallows, luckily i had my fantastic mamabear helping and cutting with me (most of them..)  i've seen popcorn cupcakes, but the best i found and fully copied was from my fellow tcnj/facebook friend susan hoppe, who i stalk because she makes awesome cakes!

cartoons, comics, cakes

yesterday was my first day back at work after a long, happy summer off, where i did not regret a single time i was up all hours of every night and fully slept most days away. the perks of working in a school. the last week or two before heading back, i was bombarded by a bunch of cakes and cupcakes to make, almost all at once.  here are the cartoon and comic related ones, i'll share the rest next week.

venture brothers cupcakes! tim and i hit our 4-year anniversary and since i didn't do the whole "gift-giving" thing i just made him cupcakes of a favorite tv show of his. brock's face is where you see my laziness the most, but the rest are fun.

spiderman for a friend. how do you make spiderman when you have no time? give him a hunchback..?  i apparently wasn't paying attention while i was drawing him, but let's just pretend that tumor on his back is normal.

for my buddy over at laughing boy comics, i made him a cake of his own characters. i kept them black and white to make them feel more comic-y. the snake's my personal favorite character.

here's a funny snippit snappit from laughing boy comics. the gang goes to the aquarium.  this is my favorite strip from this specific story. (read the full story starting here.)

Aquarium Adventure at the Adventure Aquarium Pt. 3

more cakes and cupcakes next week!

papabear cake

i haven't been keeping up with photographing new work, hence the lack of art posts. i'll play catch up soon enough, but for now here are some new cakes.

i made this of papabear for father's day. he's a real-life cartoon, so turning him into as many different forms of art as possible is beyond fun for me.  this time he's a cake.

best picture ever.

as for some holiday cupcakes, i had planned on making some cool cupcakes for the family 4th of july picnic.  i shamefully admit i got a little lazy the night before and this was the result.. festive, but not so pretty. i'll get 'em next time.

i haven't been cupcaking enough this summer!

cupcakes galore!

i haven't shown my latest delicious edible creations, so here they are! some are improvised, some are made up, some are from books. "hello, cupcake" (and "what's new, cupcake") is my bible.

i made these for a surfer beachy friend. with crushed graham cracker sand and handmade melting candy wafer surfboards (you can tell they're handmade by the wretched shape and lumps), i made up the design for these based on random google image searches and just added little oceany critters for fun.

my easter cupcakes this year! the design is from "hello, cupcake" with some color alterations. crushed oreos for dirt and melting candy wafer bunny feet. i would have liked my grass to be more grassy, but seeing as they were red velvet cupcakes, i needed to use cream cheese icing. and my sister's homemade cream cheese icing was like liquid and didn't quite grasp the shape as much as i would have liked. but they are still cute!

yo gabba gabba cupcakes and smash cake! i have no idea what yo gabba gabba is, and maybe they would have come out better if i did, but i think they are still cute and fun.

pretty butterfly cupcakes made from melting candy wafers for my co-workers! the design is from "hello, cupcake" and when i made my second back for my second group of co-workers, i switched up the colors and made pretty pink ones.

and today's last cake is a dinosaur cake for a friend's birthday!  we share the same favorite dinosaur, so i couldn't help but make a cute parasaurolophus cake. best dinosaur ever.
