i've briefly mentioned my awkwardness before (...ok, more like every other post) but now you get to see it LIVE! i'm awkward enough in photos, do we really need live action?

i'm going against my better judgement by posting this, but here's a video from opening night at the 3B sShow at gallery 1988 venice in santa monica. it includes a super brief interview with gallery 1988's co-owner jenson karp, myself, and a few other artists. it's kind of a big deal for me to be posting this considering how painfully awkward i am. i was indescribably embarrassed to speak, let alone watch it now. not to mention, i was sick and lost my voice the day before. i obviously should have described my inspiration for my bttf piece in a bit more detail, considering how much there is to it... so instead, click here to read my post all about my bttf piece!

the opening was a blast. i was and am absolutely in love with a ton of the beetlejuice artwork. we were visited by not one, but two deloreans, and to my excitement, my coolness rank raised when i got in the driver's seat for a quick cheesy photo shoot. huge thanks to gallery 1988 and chogrin for having me in yet another amazing show.

.....unfortunately, my fun time was cut short when near the end of the night, i got sick and was forced to head back to the hotel for the beginning of a long (long), horrible (horrible) stomach virus. awesome.

"shark still looks fake..."

hill valley, 2015: my back to the future piece for the autumn society's 3B show at gallery 1988 ! sticking with the 3-dimensional painting theme, with marty and the shark painted on glass 1/4" above the town background.  i added a bit more of the 3D touch to the flat background by raising the cafe and jaws signs. here are the individual layers to give a better idea of the piece's look:

when i found out one of the movies for the 3B show was back to the future, i wouldn't say i was disappointed, but i would have liked to illustrate a new movie, considering i had just done two BTTF commissions. the two commissions i did were from the first and third of the series, so naturally, i took this as an opportunity (and challenge) to complete the set by illustrating a scene from back to the future part 2. my BTTF buff of a boyfriend suggested the 3D jaws scene, so i took it and ran with it.  i watched this specific part dozens of times for reference, and when marty says the "shark still looks fake," i laughed like an idiot every time. fantastic. i wanted to do a little more than just a painting of a cartoony shark, so i pieced together some different elements from that specific scene.  i had no choice but to include cafe 80's since there is nothing i love more than the 80's.

i also added in the antique shop that marty takes a peek in.  it is a teeny tiny piece of the painting, so it was hard to get too detailed, but i made sure to (attempted..) to include the infamous sports almanac. i also noticed a roger rabbit stuffed animal in the window, when i realized robert zemeckis, director of BTTF, also directed roger rabbit, one of my all time favorite movies, so i had to include roger in my piece as well.

i'm pretty excited about marty's color changing cap. while painting his pretty, shimmery, metallicy multi-colored hat from the movie, i realized i had some iridescent paints lying around and they were perfect for a little extra detail. i was a little overexcited about it, but in the end, you could only see the iridescence in the right light, from the right angles.  but it's there!

also, i have posted some photos below to (hopefully) give a better idea of how the 3-dimensional part comes in. you may notice (probably based on the shadows casted) that both the cafe and jaws signs are raised a bit above the painting. just trying to give some more dimension in addition to the paintings on glass.

3B sneak peek #2

my pieces for the autumn society's upcoming 3B show : back to the future, bill and ted's excellent adventure, and beetlejuice (sequel to last year's 3G show ) are far from finished, but they're coming along. i showed you a tiny preview of my beetlejuice painting, now here's a mini teaser from my back to the future piece. it's a teeny tiny close up from a much larger painting. show opens may 5 at gallery 1988 venice (santa monica, california), keep a look out for more updates!

hi-ho, silver!

commissioned back to the future paintings ! the second of two, both are 11"x 14" layered acrylic paintings, which unforunately doesn't come across well in the photo, but keep in mind there is some dimension to it! the deloreon, 2-3 indians, and some "dust" are on glass raised about an inch above the landscape background. got to love that depth!

this scene is from the third movie, when marty's being chased by indians immediately upon going back in time. i was dreading painting the little indians, they were a pain, but i got it. this time, i got the right version of the delorean on the first try....

1.21 gigawatts

this scene is from the first movie, when doc and marty go back to the future! with the famous clock tower and of course, the delorean (which i almost gave a die-hard fan a completely incorrect painting by painting the deloreon from a later movie... thank you tim..)

back to the future art !

who's ready for some awesome back to the future art?! i am! after the autumn society's recent fantastic 3G show at gallery 1988 in los angeles, i was contacted by a pop-art collector, specifically of back to the future. he is clearly a very serious back to the future fan, and after seeing my glorious 3-dimensional 3G pieces (take a look back if you haven't seen them!), this nice fella commissioned me to make some back to the future art in the same 3D style. considering how much i loved working on those pieces and even more how much i loved the outcomes, i jumped on the opportunity to make more. basically, for these, i painted them in layers: the background, and the second layer raised above about an inch on glass. it's really tough to get the true vibe of the painting in these photos. they are infinitely cooler in person.

he gave me a lot of freedom, which is always nice. he basically just stated he is a sucker for anything dealing with the delorean and thought the indian scene would be cool. i rewatched each movie looking for good screenshots with the delorean somewhere in the picture.  as much as i do enjoy the movies, i'm not a fanatic for them and i don't know them all that well, so luckily i had my handy dandy boyfriend help me with little details and suggestions.  i sent over some concepts and sketches and he chose which ones he wanted. and viola! a million years later, i finished.

they were a blast to make, and i can't help but obsess over the 3D look. please check out the individual posts dedicated to each painting, with some info about the painting and photos of each layer to get a better feel for the piece. it is vital that you do so! "1.21 gigawatts" and "hi-ho, silver!"
there are so, so so many more movie scenes that need to be recreated!

back to the future

as mentioned yesterday, i'm doing some 3-dimensional back to the future art. two commissioned pieces, which i've already begun, but are now my entire focus until completed. then onto the next project. here are some (crappy) sketches, but a taste of  what's on the way
